The Walking Dead Season 3 premiere is almost here! For those of us zombie enthusiasts, it seems like ages that we’ve been waiting for this day. Until now, we’ve been watching and re-watching the past two seasons of The Walking Dead, immersing ourselves in the brilliant story telling and zombie-filled escapes just in the nick-of-time.
To get everybody up to speed, the first season of The Walking Dead premiered on AMC back in October of 2010. It takes place in a post-apocalyptic world that is overrun by zombies. However, the show is full of so much more than that. It begins when our main character Rick Grimes, played by Andrew Lincoln, wakes up alone out of a coma.
Miraculously, Rick meets up with his wife Lori, played by the lovely Sarah Wayne Callies, and their son Carl, played by Chandler Riggs. They begin a fight for survival alongside a brilliant cast of characters, including the kick-butt blonde, Andrea, played by Laurie Holden, and the wild Daryl Dixon, played by the steamy Norman Reedus. Throughout the two seasons, the group moves around the outskirts of Atlanta searching for a safe haven. Rick discovers that in this new world, it takes a new kind of person to survive. The group seems to have exactly what it takes, until he ends up going head to head in battle to the death with his once best friend Shane, played by Jon Bernthal. When season two ends, we watch zombies take over the once safe harbor known as Hershel’s farm.
The group has split with lives lost and zombie encounters. Love and new life have begun to bloom. We know that this democracy has become a “Ricktatorship,” as Rick lays down the law in an unnervingly stern way. Andrea fights for her life and is saved at the last minute by a katana sword bearing hooded figure. The group is stranded out in a zombie-filled world and doom seems imminent. But as the camera pans away, we are shown a dark, looming building nearby over the hills of Georgia.
The Walking Dead stars an award-winning cast of Andrew Lincoln (Rick Grimes), Sarah Wayne Callies (Lori Grimes), Chandler Riggs (Carl Grimes), Laurie Holden (Andrea), Norman Reedus (Daryl Dixon), Steven Yeun (Glenn), Melissa McBride (Carol Peletier), IronE Singleton (T-Dog), Lauren Cohan (Maggie Greene), Scott Wilson (Hershel Greene), and Emily Kinney (Beth Greene). It is based on the comics by Robert Kirkman, and produced by Gale Ann Hurd, and Glen Mazzara.
It has been announced that Danai Gurira will join the cast as Michonne, and David Morrissey as the Governer. Returning will be Michael Rooker as Merle Dixon.
The Walking Dead was nominated for Best Television Series Drama at the 68th Golden Globe Awards. The show won for Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup for a Series, Miniseries, Movie or a Special at the 63rd primetime Emmy awards.
To catch up, both seasons are now available on DVD or Blu-ray as of September. Season three premiers on October 14 on AMC.
