A musical based on the 1983 hit film Flashdance will be opening on Broadway Aug. 2013. The show will also go on a national tour.
Flashdance: The Musical will be directed and choreographed by Sergio Trujillo (Jersey Boys, Memphis), reported Broadway.com. The announcement from the producers promises that it has been “substantially rewritten and completely restaged under its new producing team” since the musical first opened in the UK in 2008. It toured the UK in 2009, then opened at the Shaftesbury Theatre in the West End in Sept. 2010. It closed earlier than hoped in Jan. 2011.
The announcement did not include a cast, theater or dates for the Broadway run. However, the dates for the national tour have been set. It will start in January at the Heinz Hall in Pittsburgh, the location where the film and musical took place. The production will go tour over 25 North American markets.
Tom Hedley, who co-wrote the 1983 film, wrote the book with Robert Cary. Robbie Roth wrote the music and Robert Cary penned the lyrics.
The original film, released by Paramount, grossed $150 million and starred Jennifer Beals, Michael Nouri and Lilia Skala. The song “Flashdance...What a Feeling” won an Oscar for Best Original Song.
