American Idol alum Kellie Pickler appeared on Good Morning America with a strong message – and a startling new look.
According to E! Online, the North Carolina native shaved her head in support of her childhood friend, Summer Holt Miller, 36, who was diagnosed with cancer in June.
People reports that Miller hopes that the country star’s symbolic gesture will encourage more women to get mammograms even before the recommended age of 40.
“If this compels even one person to change their mentality toward waiting until the age of 40 for their mammogram, then it will be worth it.”
Pickler added, “Cancer does not discriminate.”
Miller, who has a family history of breast cancer, was always careful when it came to her health. She asked her doctor to perform a mammogram when she sensed that something wasn’t right. Her intuition was right and the doctors found a tumor. Pickler’s “sister” underwent a double mastectomy and was declared cancer-free in August. She is scheduled to begin chemotherapy on Thursday to ensure that the cancer does not return.
The 26-year-old singer tweeted yesterday that she had “a great life-changing day” and added, “Be sure to watch 'Good Morning America' tomorrow morning (Sept 5th). You won't want to miss this!!! ;)”
