On September 6, Kristen Stewart made her first public appearance following her cheating scandal at the On the Road premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, and the Twilight actress opened up about going topless for her new role.
Us Weekly reported that Stewart stars in director Walter Salles’ film adaptation of Jack Kerouc’s novel, On the Road. She plays the role of Dean Moriarty’s wife, Marylou, a role which includes baring her breasts on screen.
According to MTV News, the 22-year-old actress was not fazed by the demand to go topless, due in large part to the supportive environment that Salles created for the actors.
"It didn't bother me," Stewart reveals. "You can do no wrong with [Salles]. He puts so much inside of you. In the four-week rehearsal process, it was okay to ask any question, to bring up any story, to really overanalyze everything and intellectualize everything."
Although Marylou is 16-years-old, Stewart admits that she would have played the role differently if she were younger. In fact, she added that she wouldn’t have even considered the role if she were younger.
But Stewart embraced the spirit of Kerouac’s novel and committed herself entirely to the role of Marylou. At this stage in her career, she feels comfortable doing what Salles asks of her.
"Once we got on set, it was so about just breathing and letting it happen. He put so much trust in us," she explained. "So it was like, 'OK, so I have to take my clothes off?' It's so not a big [deal]."
