Matt Lauer faces pay cut if ‘Today’s’ ratings continue to drop

By Allison Cordaro,

Since Ann Curry’s hasty departure and Robin Roberts’s parting to fight her battle with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), Good Morning America has overtaken the Today show’s popularity among morning viewers. Unfortunately for Matt Lauer, if this trend continues, his $25 million salary could be endangered.

Radar Online reported that Matt Lauer’s popularity has plummeted in the recent months. His “likeability” among viewers has dropped 25 percent in the last 12 months alone.

This could be due, in part, to negative feelings associated with Curry’s departure. Some producers “hate” Lauer for his role in her tearful exit from the show.

According to The New York Daily News, Lauer could face a pay cut if these trends continue.

A source revealed, “Matt Lauer will be asked to take a significant cut in his $25 million salary if ‘Today’ doesn’t win the key November sweeps.”

The May and November sweeps evaluate how networks are faring among viewers and determine how much the networks can charge for advertising.

Although a representative for the Today show denied the report, it is not an unprecedented practice for TV personalities at NBC to face pay cuts. Earlier this month, NBC cut Jay Leno, the host of The Tonight Show’s, salary in half.
