Mindy Kaling takes step forward to center stage in 'The Mindy Project' (Video)

After several years of scene stealing as the superficial and self-conscious Kelly Kapoor on The Office, Mindy Kaling headlines her own sitcom in The Mindy Project this upcoming fall.

Kaling will make at least one final appearance on The Office season nine as reported by The Huffington Post. Many people initially counted her completely out of season nine because her new show, but Kaling grew attached to her character.

"I got so attached to that character, even though I only got maybe one line per episode," Kaling said. "It'll be nice to see what happens with Kelly."

The new sitcom is modeling itself after the success of FOX’s New Girl, which is also headlined by the easy to love quirky girl Zooey Deschanel. Like New Girl the show has posted it’s pilot episode on Hulu before it’s debut on September 25.

The Mindy Project will center on a medical doctor and her struggles with dating world. Through several comedic and exaggerated events Kaling will try to balance her professional and personal life, which gets hard once Kaling gets involved with Ed Weeks as you can see below in the behind-the scenes featurette.

Based on her time at The Officeit’s obvious that Kaling has the comedic chops to play an bigger role in a sitcom, but it will be interesting to see if she can lead a show. E! Online sure seems to think so as they said the pilot “charms the pants off us.”
