Regis Philbin may have left Live! after 28 seasons last year, but the 81-year-old TV icon is remaining active and has picked his next gig. Philbin will start working with Rachael Ray, making frequent appearances on her daytime talk show.
“I tried to make a distinct point that I wasn't retiring, that I was moving on,” Philbin told USA Today Monday. “Everybody said 'retired'!”
Philbin will co-host a full hour of The Rachael Ray Show just once a month. When he was offered the position, he said he could not refuse. “I'm not gonna say I don't want to do your show! I think it's fun. I spent my whole life doing this,” adding that the advantage of doing the show is that he doesn’t have to wake up so early.
He clarified his role, noting, “I'm not a co-host, I'm just a guy showing up on her show once a month...I love the idea. It's fun to be back on TV when you don't have to do it every day.”
“It'll be a blast having him on the team,” added Ray.
While Philbin has been selective with his roles since leaving Live! with Regis & Kelly in November, he has continued working, reports ABC News. He recently did a guest stint on Hot in Cleveland and anchored CNN’s Piers Morgan Tonight when Morgan was off.
Ray and Philbin have worked together in the past, with Philbin making appearances on her show. “I like her a lot,” he said. “I've done her show a number of times. She has followed my show here in New York at 10. She has become a friend. (My wife) Joy and I have been to her home. She and her husband John have been to ours. She's a little dynamo.”
Philbin will make his first appearance on Monday.
