After a drowning box office last week, Resident Evil: Retribution flipped things around this weekend, boosting movie goer’s interest and coming out on top with an estimated earning of $21.1 million.
According to a report, the new action film, the fifth in its franchise and starring Milla Jovovich, took the number 1 spot for the weekend box office earnings.
The movie trumped Disney Pixar’s re-release of Finding Nemo which took second place with $17.5 million.
Hollywood News reports that Lawless, starring Shia Labeouf and Tom Hardy, took the fourth place spot earning $4.2 million, with The Possession earning $5.8 million and stealing third place.
The Resident Evil Screen Gems franchise has earned an estimated $700 million worldwide. The latest installment, directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, follows hardcore, fearless Alice, played by Jovovich, as she fights a resistance movement of zombies. The film also brings back the character of Rain, played by Michelle Rodriguez, who was killed off in the first movie.
