This Week in Music

By Lori Alamia,
VMA's 8 PM tonight, Matchbox 20 is back, and more

In honor of MTV’s Video Music awards tonight, featured below are predictions for winners in a few of the main categories:

For best new artist: Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe.” With its various covers and widespread popularity, this song could be a definite winner.

For best male video, I predict Justin Bieber’s "Boyfriend". The Biebs is loved by many, so I am sure his fans will make sure he wins.

Las Vegas based alternative rock band Imagine Dragons released their debut album Night Visions.

For best rock video, their video for their song “It’s Time” was nominated. It’s a good one, so I hope to see it win.

And for video of the year: Gotye’s "Somebody That I Used to Know." The breakup anthem, played a million times over this summer, seems to be a likely win.

In new releases:

After 10 years, Matchbox 20 returns with an all new album North. The title refers to them finding their direction. The songs show they have kept it.

Christian hip hop artist Lecrae released album Gravity. It has some great beats and a positive message.

Alternative artist Cat Power released new album Sun. Sun however doesn’t mean bright and cheery but strong and melancholy.

The talented icon Melissa Etheridge released album 4th Street Feeling. Among the great tracks of her raspy vocals and good lyrics, “I Can Wait” stands out.

In other news:

Who is the wealthiest hip hop artist? After the buzz around the birth of Blue Ivy Carter, one would think Jay Z is but it’s actually Dr Dre.

Kanye West’s new single Clique makes reference to Kim Kardasian’s fame via her sex tape. Reference to this scandal may cause even more of a scandal in the Kardasian/Jenner household.

Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong is thankfully recovered from his recent hospitalization while on your in Italy. He is to perform at tonight’s VMA’s.

And finally, the VMA’S will start at 8:00 PM EST tonight. They were originally scheduled for 9 PM but were moved up to accommodate President Obama’s speech.

Be sure to tune in!
