'X Factor' ratings decrease during premiere week

By Karla Demery,

Though many viewers welcomed the premiere of X Factor this weekend, some of them have abandoned ship. During the show's debut last September, 12.7 million viewers tuned in. This number, much lower than Simon Cowell's prediction of 20 million viewers, has since decreased. Coming in at only 8.5 million viewers this week, there are obvious causes for this unfortunate drop.

According to Rolling Stone, X Factor is up against the other popular talent show, The Voice. The Voice established influential judges Adam Levine, Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, and country singer Blake Shelton, from the beginning while X Factor just recently enlisted the judging talents of pop stars Britney Spears and Demi Lovato. It is still not certain that this new addition will boost future X Factor ratings.

With the rise of the talent show genre since American Idol debuted in 2005, it is possible that America is just searching for new things to watch. The Hollywood Reporter states that the hit show Glee premiered on the same night and received a 3.3 rating which is .2 points higher than X Factor's 3.1 rating.
