Nathan Fillion and Sean Mather from the Joss Whedon show Firefly told fans at the New York Comic Con there is a possibility the show will be made into an animated series.
Members of the Firefly cast, including Nathan Fillion (Castle) who played the main character Malcolm “Mal” Reynolds in the show, spent time at Comic Con promoting their tenth anniversary special which will air on the Science Channel next month, reported the NY Post.
Fillion asked fans “If we’re dreaming, tell me what you think about this: ‘Firefly’ the animated series.”
Sean Mather, who played Dr. Simon Tam on the show, told fans: “I know somebody who is actually trying to get that done, who has approached Joss [Whedon, the creator] about it. He used to work with Guillermo del Toro.”
Fans of the show are known as Browncoats, which is a reference to the side of the war in which Mal and Zoe fought. The show aired on Fox in 2002 for one short season, but became a cult classic and led to a movie, Serenity, in 2005.
Fillion went on to say:
“I think there’s less face to be lost in an animated series. I think if there was going to be a second movie, it would have happened by now. That was eight years ago.”
Last month, Fillion spoke to MTV and said he thinks a Firefly video game would be “nice” and mentioned an animated series would be great as well.
The Science Channel’s anniversary special Browncoats Unite, will air Nov. 11.
