According to the Associated Press, Daryl Hannah, who gained fame as Tom Hanks’ mermaid crush in Splash, was arrested on Thursday in northeast Texas while protesting the construction of an oil pipeline.
Taken into custody by Wood County Sherriff’s deputies alongside Hannah was a 78-year-old local landowner who joined in the protest of the pipeline designed to transport crude from Canada to the Gulf Coast.
According to Perez Hilton, Daryl Hannah’s manager Paul Bassis confirms reports, stating, “They’ve arrested Daryl Hannah and a rural Texas great-grandmother.” Bassis added that he had spoken to the actress Thursday evening and that there was "a strong indication" that both she and Eleanor Fairchild would be kept in lock-up overnight.
Hannah and 78-year-old Fairchild had positioned themselves in front of necessary equipment in an attempt to stop construction of the Keystone XL pipeline on Fairchild’s Winnsboro, TX, property.
The Kill Bill actress was also arrested, among several hundred activists and scientists, in August of 2011 while protesting the pipeline in Washington. She has reportedly long opposed TransCanada’s construction of the $7 billion pipeline.
David Dodson, a spokesperson for TransCanada, has stated, "It is unfortunate Ms. Hannah and other out-of-state activists have chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property.”
