Golden Globe winner Shailene Woodley in talks to play Mary Jane in 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2'

By Gina DiFalco,

Shailene Woodley, best known for her role opposite George Clooney in The Descendants, is reportedly in discussions to play Mary Jane Watson in the upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

The Sony project directed by Marc Webb and also stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone is gearing up to start casting for the sequel and Woodley’s name has been at the top of the list for the role of Mary Jane.

Variety reports that another role looking to be filled is Harry Osborn, Peter Parker’s best friend-turned-enemy, who was played by James Franco in director Sam Raimi’s original franchise starring Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker and Kirsten Dunst as MJ.

Production won’t start until early next year, so Sony has some time to cast the roles.

CNN reports that in the sequel to this year’s LThe Amazing Spider-Man, the villain might be Electro instead of Osborn.

Woodley won a Golden Globe and an Independent Spirit Award for her role in The Descendants. She got her start on ABC Family’s The Secret Life of the American Teenager and will remain on the show until the end of its run, which will be after its upcoming fifth season.

The film has a May 2, 2014 release date.
