J.J. Abrams was on Conan Thursday to talk about NBC’s Revolution, but there was no way Conan O’Brien wasn’t going to ask him about his Star Trek sequel, now titled Star Trek Into Darkness. Abrams actually had some footage to show, but there was a catch.
Paramount would only allow the director to show a clip that was exactly three frames long, notes Entertainment Weekly.
“This is a scene where Spock … for reasons that you’ll have to see the film to understand, is in a volcano in this crazy suit,” he told O’Brien.
After the clip was gone in less than a second, the audience gave it a rousing applause and O’Brien gave it a standing ovation.
Paramount finally announced the film’s title last month. It will be released in 2D and 3D on May 17, 2013.
Zachary Quinto will be back as Spock, as will Chris Pine as Kirk and the rest of the Enterprise crew from the hit 2009 film. Sherlock actor Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve and Peter Weller will be joining the cast.
Filming has been completed, but Paramount and Abrams are keeping a tight lip when it comes to what role Cumberbatch will be playing. Fans only know that he is starring as the villain.
