Liam Neeson’s ‘Taken 2’ expected to draw big numbers at the box office

By Daniel S Levine,

Audiences are prepared to get Taken again at the box office, with Taken 2 opening at the box office this weekend. The sequel to the 2009 surprise hit is expected to continue an upward trend at the box office started by Hotel Transylvania and Looper last week. Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie and Universal’s Pitch Perfect also open wide this weekend.

Despite opening on Super Bowl weekend in 2009, the original Taken debuted to $24.7 million and eventually grossed $145 million. The revenge action thriller is still popular and made Liam Neeson an overnight action star, leading to roles in other action films such as The Grey. So, it was a no-brainer for Fox to make a sequel. Box Office Mojo reports that the film will open at 3,661 locations and could make as much as $49 million this weekend.

However, unlike Taken, Taken 2 isn’t drawing strong reviews. It has just a 16 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes at the moment.

Entertainment Weekly predicts that Hotel Transylvania will drop to $24 million in its second weekend. The film opened to a surprising $42 million last week.

Frankenweenie, a stop-motion animation film based on an early Burton short, is expected to open at around $15 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Universal’s Pitch Perfect opened to $5.1 million at just 331 locations last weekend. This weekend, it goes wide and is expected to make around $13 million to $15 million.

Looper is expected to add another $12 million to $13 million in its second weekend.
