With the help of filmmaker James Cameron, the men of Mythbusters set out to find out whether or not fictional character Jack Dawson from Titanic could have survived the devastating sinking of the ship.
Hosts Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman and Cameron seek to find out if Leonardo DiCaprio’s character Jack should have died on that wooden board or if he and Rose, played by Kate Winslet, could have shared it and both made it out alive.
Starpulse.com reports that the scene played in the movie is accurate, if Jack were to hang out on the board for as long as he did, he would’ve died from hypothermia and Rose could have stayed in the water for that long until her resue.
But their findings on Mythbusters found that if Rose would’ve strapped her lifejacket to the wooden board and the both of them fit on it, the jacket would have increased their buoyancy and they both would have lived.
Cameron, however, says at one point in the episode "I think you guys are missing the point here. The script says Jack died. He has to die. So maybe we screwed up and the board should have been a little tiny bit smaller, but the dude’s goin’ down.”
Entertainment Weekly reports that Savage and Hyneman had hypothermia tests performed, as well as a dummy to help them figure out the answers they were looking for.
The episode aired on Sunday but look at a clip here:
