Singer Nicole Scherzinger has become the latest celebrity to go public with an eating disorder, revealing in the upcoming episode of Vh1’s Behind The Music that she dealt with bulimia for years.
“I did it every day for, like, years,” the former Pussy Cat Dolls singer said, reports MTV. “Every time I had a second to be alone, I was doing something to myself. You get, like, blisters on your hands or scars on your hands, and I'd try to hide those. I think the girls could tell.”
"I just hated myself,” she added. “I hated myself. I really was so disgusted with myself and so embarrassed. I felt so alone. I was in a group, and I never felt so alone in my life.”
According to Entertainment Weekly, Scherzinger talks about how difficult it is to talk about her struggle. “Yeah, I’m nervous about it,” she said, calling it “embarrassing.”
“It’s embarrassing. I never spoke about it,” she said. “Like I said, I never want to play a victim, and I never wanted my family to hear about things from me because I think it would break their heart, you know. I guess it was like my addiction, right? I never did drugs, but kinda doing things to myself was my addiction. It’s like when I got off stage, I was on this high, and I’d come back to my room and I’d be alone, so I would just do things. My bulimia was my addiction; hurting myself was my addiction.”
Body image has become a hot topic among celebrities as of late, with Demi Lovato addressing her issues with eating disorders. Last month, Lady Gaga launched her A Body Revolution project when she posted a series of revealing photos. “Now that the body revolution has begun, be brave and post a photo of you that celebrates your triumph over insecurities,” she encouraged her fans on LittleMonsters.com.
Vh1’s Behind The Music special on the Pussy Cat Dolls airs Sunday at 9pm.
