Seth MacFarlane’s Ted has officially become a record breaking film at the box office, the worldwide box office that is.
The Hollywood Reporter reports that the comedy surpassed $469 million at the foreign box office, meaning that it officially made more than The Hangover did back in 2009. That film halted at $467.5 million.
This makes Ted the highest grossing non-sequel R-rated comedy at the worldwide box office ever (now say it three times fast).
Entertainment Weekly points out that the actual highest grossing R-rated comedy of all time is The Hangover Part II, which made $581.5 million worldwide.
Domestically, the original Hangover still has a leg up on Ted, which will likely stick for a while unless the latter has a successful re-release in the future. In the U.S., Ted made $218.5 million while The Hangover made $277.3 million.
But Ted still has four more international markets to open in. They are Malaysia, India, Venezuela and Japan. The film will likely land around the $500 million mark by the time it ends its run.
Ted will be available December 11 on Blu-ray and DVD in the U.S.
