Titus Welliver leaves ‘The Last Ship’ pilot, replaced by Adam Baldwin

By Meaghan Fleming,

Chuck star Adam Baldwin has replaced Titus Welliver in the TNT pilot for Michael Bay’s project The Last Ship.

Deadline reports Welliver (Deadwood) dropped the project because of a health emergency in the family. TNT did not state who was unwell, but Deadline says Welliver’s wife has been ill recently.

The show focuses on the crew of the USS Nathan James after a global disaster in which they are among the small number of survivors on Earth. Baldwin will play Mike Slattery, who is second in command to Eric Dane’s character, Captain Tom Chandler. The two will have conflicting viewpoints about strategy in various situations.

The pilot is based on William Brinkley’s novel of the same name.

Bay is executive producing the pilot and Jonathan Mostow is directing. Hank Steinberg (Without a Trace) and Steven Kane (The Closer) are writing the script. Steinberg is the show’s frontrunner according to TV Guide .

Baldwin is well-known for his role as spy John Casey on Chuck, and his role on the Joss Whedon show Firefly as Jayne Cobb.

He recently guest starred on Law & Order: SVU for three episodes.
