Top 10 Horror Movie Villains

By Danielle Costa,
With horror movies comes the villains who make them! Here's a list of the top ten villains of all time!

Halloween is around the corner and these is no better way to celebrate than to sit down with some popcorn balls and candy corn and pop in some horror movies. Whether you watch the originals or the remakes, one things if for sure, there is no shortage of scary movies to see and horror villains to fear!

10. Chucky
Chucky was originally a man who was also a voodoo practitioner. One day while bleeding to death, he used voodoo to transfer his soul to a doll. Originally Charles Lee Ray or the “Lakeshore Strangler,” Chucky now gets to his victims through this doll form. What could be worse than a seemingly innocent thing, a toy, attacking people? Yeah, not much else.

9. Ghost Face from the Scream series
Attacking a bunch of teenagers in a small town in a common Halloween costume, Ghost Face is the epitome of the slasher villain. Killing everyone in its way, Ghost Face literally slashes his way to the top, and in this case it’s main protagonist Sidney. There is a voice changer that messes with the natural voice of the person behind the mask and the weapon of choice, a knife of course. What really sets this killer apart is the way it contacts its victims: with a phone call. Its famous line - “What’s your favorite movie?” - spawns a series of gory killings that no one could predict. Thanks to this one, I hate answering the phone when I’m home alone!

8. Jigsaw and Billy from the Saw series
Jigsaw is really a man with cancer who has gone insane and with that insanity has decided to ruin our world as we know it and start with killing as many people as possible. Jigsaw is a mysterious person who kidnaps people and tries to “help” his victims by making them do insane and inhumane things. Unlike other villains, he does not intend to kill, he just wants to see if they can survive. Billy the Puppet is the one who delivers the messages of Jigsaw to his victims. With such a creepy face and voice, its no wonder many consider him the main villain and not the one who is pulling his strings.

7. the shark from Jaws
This movie was the first of its kind when it came out. The villain is a real and tangible one that exists not only in this movie, but in the world we all live in. Sharks. This movie scared people out of the water for months after its release and it’s no wonder why! The movie also has one of the most infamous scores in movie history. Two notes is all it took for the victims to know of its presence and the audience to be wishing they could swim away!

6. The Blair Witch from The Blair Witch Project
You never really see the Blair Witch in this one, but maybe that is just as bad as seeing the killer in front of you. This movie was the first of its kind with a home movie quality to it, putting the audience right in the victim’s spot. With the found footage, you only see the aftermath of everything that has happened, and you never get a look at the Blair Witch itself.

5. Norman Bates from Psycho
A man who experienced extreme abuse as a child due to his mother. He was taught that women are evil and sex is bad. He and his mother lived alone until he murdered her out of jealousy for her lover. He then takes on her personality and preserves her corpse as a way to push down his guilt. Throughout the movie you are convinced he is just a lonely and mixed up guy, but how mixed up is the question. With his schizophrenic ways and the infamous shower scene capturing his victims when they are the most vulnerable, he is seriously deranged and one of the scariest villains in history.

4. Michael Myers from Halloween
Michael Myers first appears as a young boy who kills his older sister. He ends up in a sanitarium, but breaks out to kill his niece and other teenagers in the area. Much like other villains, doesn’t speak and he just kind of stares at his victims with this blankness that would creep anyone out. He has supernatural strength and it seems he can escape any situation he is put in. Oh, and he wears a mask that is modeled after the face of William Shatner; I can never look at the Star Trek star the same way again.

3. Freddy Kreuger from A Nightmare On Elm Street
Freddy Kreuger will go down in history as one of the scariest villains around. If not for his disfigured face, his claw hands or his inability to wear new clothes, ever, then for his unbeatable nature. Freddy kills people in their dreams! But, it’s just a dream right? Wrong. When he attacks his victims in their minds, he also attacks them in their bodies, simultaneously giving them the world’s worst nightmare. While the first film had him destroyed at the end, it was revealed later on that he is not actually dead, and thus he goes on to kill even more people throughout the series. I’d watch these movies in the early morning, otherwise you’re sure to have a little nightmare whatever street you live on!

2. Jason Vorhees from Friday the 13th
Could anything be scarier than a killer who talks slowly and moves even slower? It’s not the speed that is scary, it’s the pure anticipation of what is about to happen. Jason was a young boy who drowned at camp one summer. That camp is the infamous, Camp Crystal Lake. He doesn’t speak, his face is covered by a hockey mask and he carries a machete. His victims have no real chance as his silent nature and his virtual indestructibility make him a tough one to beat. However, the chink in his armor? Bring him back to the lake that started it all...but as shown in the amount of sequels this series got, even that isn’t foolproof. My suggestion? Just stay as far away from Camp Crystal Lake as you can!

1. Leatherface from Texas Chainsaw Massacre
He wears a mask made of human skin which explains his name. He is loosely based on the real life serial killer Ed Gein, who reportedly wore a mask made of skin. He kills and even partakes in cannibalism throughout the movie and he uses a chainsaw to chop his victims up; hence the name “chainsaw massacre.” A lot of people consider him one of the first and best horror movie villains around. Another draw? He is one of the few villains to never die in any movie! Talk about indestructible.
