Academy Award for best visual effects down to ten films

By Matthew Dougherty,

Visual effects may not be the first thing you think of when people say Oscars, but it is one of the few categories everyone’s favorite popcorn flicks have a legitimate chance to get nominated.

The ten films are The Amazing Spider-man, Cloud Atlas, The Dark Knight Rises, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, John Carter, Life of Pi, The Avengers, Prometheus, Skyfall and Snow White and the Huntsman, according to ComingSoon.net.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that all three of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films won the award in 2001, 2002 and 2003 respectively, making this first Hobbit film one to keep an eye on.

The last four films to win the award, Hugo, Inception, Avatar and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button were all nominated for Best Picture.

With that in mind, Ang Lee’s Life of Pi is getting the most Oscar buzz out of the ten films.

Half of the current list will be taken out by the time the nominations come out in early January.
