Ariel Winter's mom claims she attempted to save 'Modern Family' actress from statutory rape

By Sarah Burbank-Douglas,

More details are surfacing surrounding Modern Family actress Ariel Winter and her legal drama with her mother, Crystal Workman.

Workman reportedly released a statement Thursday proclaiming that she didn’t abuse her daughter, but instead she was stopping an incident of statutory rape, TMZ reports.

The statement reads, “My fourteen-year-old daughter has been dating an eighteen-and-a-half-year-old man, and when I caught them engaging in behavior that I feel my daughter is too young mentally and physically to understand and fully grasp I put a stop to it immediately."

She explained, “I love my daughter very much. I would never abuse her in anyway and I have always tried my best to always protect her and do what is right for her."

However, TMZ reports that Crystal didn’t file the report against the alleged boyfriend until two weeks after the reported September 24 event and five days after she lost custody of the young actress. A court source tells TMZ that there is no mention of a boyfriend in the documents.

Yesterday, Workman came forward to proclaim that the abuse claims are simply “untrue.”

The abuse claims stated in the paperwork range from slapping and hitting to verbal abuse about Ariel’s weight and attempts to “sexualize” a minor.

A court hearing is set for November 20.
