As 2012 is close to end, Babycenter has released the list of the most popular baby names for the year, with Aiden and Sophia raking in as the most popular names of the year.
According to the list provided on BabyCenter website, Aiden topped the list as the most popular boy name, with Ethan coming in a very close second. Jack, Jackson, Jacob, and Jayden also made the top 10 list- also making the letter “J” the most popular letter to start a boy’s name with in the calendar year.
As for little girls names, Sophia (in a variety spelling forms) topped the list, followed by Emma, Olivia, Isabella, Ava, Lilly and Zoe following shortly behind.
Not making the top 10 list for little girls include Emily, Emma and Madelyn, as well as Abigail, Aubrey and Avery.
Linda Murray, global editor and chief for BabyCenter, states, "Parents want names with more significance. Meaning can come from the name itself (for example, Sophia means 'wisdom' and Aiden means 'fiery') or because the name is associated with a loved one or other inspiring person,” as quoted by Parade magazine.
Noticeably absent from the list is newly controversial baby girl name Hashtag, who was born earlier this week.
