On Thursday night’s airing of the 2012 Country Music Association Awards, Song of the Year winners and married couple Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert gave an emotional, heartwarming speech for their duet, “Over You.”
People reports that Shelton walked on stage with his crying wife to accept the award, revealing what the song was about and who inspired him to write it.
“I lost my brother in a car wreck when I was 14 years old, and later in life, when I decided I wanted to be a country singer, my dad always told me, ‘Son, you should write a song about your brother.’” Shelton said. “I lost my dad in January, and it’s so amazing to me that tonight even after he’s gone, he’s still right.”
Then came Miranda’s turn, who tearfully approached the mic and said, “Thank you, Blake, for allowing me to sing this beautiful song and write it with you. Thank you CMA and all of our peers for voting for us. It’s really emotional. We love ya’ll.”
According to CBS News, Shelton went on to win Entertainer of the Year, the biggest award of the night, while Lambert took the award for Female Vocalist of the Year.
“Holy crap, I don’t know if I necessarily deserve this,” the singer beamed. “But I’ll take it.”
