Brandon T. Jackson, who is best known for his role in Ben Stiller’s Tropic Thunder, has landed the lead role of Axel Foley’s son in the Beverly Hills Cop TV series in development at CBS.
Jackson will star as Foley’s son, Aaron, who will be the focus of the series, which was created by Eddie Murphy and The Shield’s Shawn Ryan. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Aaron is a Beverly Hills officer who is trying to escape Axel’s shadow. Murphy will also reprise his role in the original films in the pilot and could stay on as a recurring actor if the show is picked up as a series.
Murphy has been working on reviving the Beverly Hills Cop franchise for years, but it finally picked up steam in August when he teamed with Ryan and began shopping the series to the major networks. Just days later, CBS landed the series.
It is being described as a crime procedural, which will perfectly fit CBS’ schedule, with some comedic gags thrown in.
Deadline reports that Jackson was Murphy’s personal choice, suggesting the comedian to CBS, which immediately liked the idea. This is only Jackson’s second TV role, following a part in the 2011 Minnie Driver pilot Hail Mary.
Aside from his role in Tropic Thunder, Jackson also appeared in Tooth Fairy and Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief.
The first Beverly Hills cop film was released in 1984 and was followed by sequels in 1987 and 1994. The 1987 film was directed by the late Tony Scott.
