Brooke Burke-Charvet, one of the co-hosts of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars, revealed Thursday that she is battling cancer and will need thyroid surgery.
“I need to have thyroid surgery and a thyroidectomy, which means I'm going to have a nice big scar right here across my neck,” the 41-year-old said in a video posted on ModernMom.com, reports People. “I don't get to just walk around and pretend like nothing happened or not follow up or not share it, because it's going to be pretty much dead center. I don't want anybody to read about it and get the wrong idea, or think that I'm sick, because I'm not.”
Burke-Charvet, who is a mother of four, said that she received the news after undergoing tests during a standard physical.
She said the results were “atypical, which means that the doctors couldn't confirm whether the nodule was cancerous or benign.” After getting second opinions and taking additional tests, the results were “not good.”
“I'm so used to being in control and taking care of everybody and my kids and now I find myself in this really out-of-control situation,” she added, notes USA Today. “Here's the way I see it: I'm just going to make a positive out of this negative thing. I'm going to be a really good patient and do everything I need to do.”
Burke-Charvet is optimistic about her future and that she is “going to be fine.”
“Doctors say this is a good kind of cancer to have,” she said. “Good cancer! That sounds so crazy. But my doctor did tell me this is a happily-ever-after ending kind of thing. I'm going fight through this.”
She promised to keep her fans up to date on her progress.
