Cate Blanchett in talks to join Disney’s live-action ‘Cinderella’ film

By Daniel S Levine,

The latest trend at the Walt Disney Company is turning its animated films into live action. While it has done this in the past, the studio is now using live action to give a new twist to the classic fairy tales. Maleficent with Angelina Jolie is already in the works and next will be Cinderella. Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett is reportedly in talks to join that project, playing the evil stepmother.

A source close to the project told The Wrap that Blanchett is close to joining the film. It is currently known as Untitled Cinderella Story and is slated to be directed by Mark Romanek.

X-Men’s Simon Kinberg will produce.

The Huffington Post notes that the project was first reported on by Deadline way back in May 2010. The Devil Wears Prada writer Aline Brosh McKenna had been hired at the time to write a script, but she is no longer involved. The Wrap notes that About A Boy writer Chris Weitz is now writing the script.

Romanek, who directed Never Let Me Go, signed on last year.

As for Blanchett, she will next be seen in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. She has also signed on for George Clooney’s The Monuments Men. She won her Oscar for 2004’s The Aviator.
