It’s official. People Magazine has declared Channing Tatum the Sexiest Man Alive for 2012.
It really shouldn’t come as a surprise, since there were rumors last week that the Magic Mike actor would get the honor. The honor also caps off an extraordinary year at the box office for the 32-year-old actor, who starred in The Vow, 21 Jump Street and Magic Mike.
“My first thought was, 'Y'all are messing with me,’” Tatum told People about his first thoughts when he got the news. “I told Jenna after we'd been in the bathtub washing our dogs because they'd gotten skunked.”
His wife, Jenna Dewan-Tatum, also couldn’t believe it. “She was like, 'What?'”
“Yeah, she calls me [the Sexiest Man Alive] now,” Tatum joked.
Tatum also spoke to people about his hobbies, which include sculpting and often quoting Edgar Allan Poe. He says that he is also finally ready to start a family with Jenna, who he married in 2009.
“I'm ready; I think she's ready,” he said. “The first number that pops into my head is three, but I just want one to be healthy and then we'll see where we go after that.”
“People know him to be fun and sexy, but they don't know how emotionally deep and spiritually open he is,” Jenna told the magazine. “He is such an open-hearted person; what you see is what you get.”
Tatum’s next projects include Foxcatcher, in which he will play an Olympic athlete.
Last year’s Sexiest Man Alive was Bradley Cooper, who appeared on the Today Show Tuesday to talk about his last day holding the title.
“I think it was instituted back with [George] Clooney, but there's a whole decompression you go through,” Cooper said about how he’ll spend his last hours. “After this, I get whisked away to somewhere in Wisconsin, and they talk me down for about a week.”
