‘Empire Strikes Back’ writer Lawrence Kasdan and ‘X-Men: First Class’ writer Simon Kinberg reportedly approached to work on new ‘Star Wars’ sequels

By Daniel S Levine,

We don’t even know who is directing Star Wars: Episode VII, but speculation on who will write Episode VIII and Episode IX has already started. According to reports, writer Lawrence Kasdan, who has worked with George Lucas and Steven Spielberg in the past, and Simon Kinberg have been approached by Disney to work on the last parts of the third Star Wars trilogy.

Deadline first reported that after Oscar-winner Michael Arndt was officially hired, Disney approached Kasdan and Kinberg about writing the follow-ups.

Sources also confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that they were approached, but their exact jobs on the films are unknown. THR’s sources say that they would also work as producers.

Kasdan is a familiar name to Star Wars fans, having written the film that is arguably considered the best of the franchise, The Empire Strikes Back. He also wrote 1983’s Return of the Jedi and worked with Lucas and Spielberg on Raiders of the Lost Ark.

As for Kinberg, he has also worked on franchises, including X-Men: First Class, X-Men: Days of Future Past and Sherlock Holmes. Coincidentally, First Class director Matthew Vaughn has been one of the names floating around as a potential Episode VII director.

Nothing has been confirmed by Disney or Lucasfilm.
