The last season of Starz’s hit Spartacus will begin in January, the cable network announced today.
According to The Wrap, Spartacus: War of the Damned will premiere on Jan. 25 at 9pm. Liam McIntyre will return in the title role. The season follows Spartacus’ victory over Roman commander Gaius Claudius Glaber and centers on the threat his band of freed slaves poses for Rome.
Todd Lasance, Simon Merrells and Anna Hutchison will be joining the cast.
Showrunner Steven S. DeKnight announced in June that the show will be ending after its third season. The show is still immensely popular and DeKnight noted that the network decided that it would be a good idea to go out on a high note.
“It's a bold move and we talked about it with Starz,” he told the Hollywood Reporter at the time. “How long do you run a show? Do you run it until you can squeeze every last bit of revenue out of it or do you end it on a high note? That was part of the decision to wrap up the show.”
In July, Starz announced that it is already developing a new series with DeKnight, titled Incursion.
Spartacus is known for its gory, over-the-top violence and graphic sex. The first season, which premiered in 2010, was titled Blood And Sand. That was followed by Vengeance, which aired earlier this year. A prequel, Gods of the Arena, was also produced.
