It looks like Paramount wants to a follow up to the massively successful Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol as soon as possible. According to a report, Christopher McQuarrie, who directed Tom Cruise in Jack Reacher, is likely to team up with the actor again for M:I 5.
Deadline is reporting that McQuarrie is the top choice for both Cruise and producer J.J. Abrams to replace Brad Bird, who directed Ghost Protocol. That film made nearly $700 million worldwide and proved that Cruise is still among the most popular actors working today.
McQuarrie and Cruise have a strong working relationship. The Oscar-winning writer for The Usual Suspects has worked with Cruise on Valkyrie. Indiewire notes that he has also worked on the scripts for Ghost Protocol and Cruise’s other upcoming project, All You Need Is Kill. He had also worked on Top Gun 2 before the project stalled after Tony Scott’s death.
Paramount and Skydance have also tapped McQuarrie to direct Without Romance, based on a Tom Clancy novel. It is not known if the studio wants to make that project first before M:I 5.
Jack Reacher is set to open on Dec. 21. All You Need Is Kill is currently scheduled for March 2014.
