30 Seconds to Mars frontman Jared Leto is ready to return to acting, taking a role in Dallas Buyers Club, which stars Matthew McConaughey as an AIDS victim. Jennifer Garner also stars in the film.
According to Variety, the project centers on Ron Woodruff, who lived for six years after he was diagnosed with AIDS. He used drugs he illegally smuggled into the US to save his life and others. McConaughey, who made headlines recently by reportedly losing 30 pounds for the role, will play Woodruff.
The Hollywood Reporter notes that Leto will play a cross-dresser who helps Woodruff.
Leto, who appeared in Fight Club and Requiem for a Dream, has not been in a film since 2009’s Mr. Nobody with Diane Kruger. The actor has been focused on his band, 30 Seconds To Mars. More recently, he directed the band’s documentary Artifact, which won the Toronto International Film Festival’s top documentary award in September.
Production on the film is set to start this weekend in New Orleans. Craig Borten and Melisa Wallack penned the script and The Young Victoria’s Jean-Marc Vallee will be directing. Robbie Brenner, Rachel Rothman-Winter and Nathan Ross are producing.
The indie project is being financed by Truth Entertainment and Voltage Pictures.
