Kevin Clash is likely to never return to Sesame Street to voice Elmo again, after allegations of having sex with a minor surfaced online. Sesame Workshop said that he had taken a leave of absence, but one report suggests that it is unlikely that he will ever play the iconic children’s character again.
According to a source for The Chicago Sun Times, it is “highly unlikely” that Clash will get his job back.
“In fact, unless things suddenly move in Kevin’s direction right away, and he is proven to be a victim of an ugly smear — rather than an adult sexual predator of a minor — he is finished in the world of children’s entertainment,” the source continued.
Another source told the site that it’s possible that the situation went public following a “lovers quarrel” between the accuser and Clash, who has admitted to having a relationship with the man. He stresses that it started after he turned 18, though.
The second source states that the “quarrel” could have been “something that turned very ugly and possibly may have involved a demand for money from Kevin in order to make this whole thing go away.”
Earlier Tuesday, racy emails from Clash to the man, who has not been publicly named, were leaked to TMZ. In them, Clash writes that he can’t stop writing about having sex with the man, who is now 23. “I want you to know that I love you and I will never hurt you. I'm here to protect you and make sure your dreams come true,” Clash wrote in one email.
The allegations went public Monday. Sesame Workshop did acknowledge the scandal, stating that Clash has taken a leave of absence.
