By Daniel S Levine,

One Direction performed on NBC’s Today Show Tuesday morning, giving fans a great start to their day. In addition to performing their hits, the UK boy band also announced their first film, a 3D concert movie that will be out in summer 2013.

The group appeared on Today to promote their new release, Take Me Home, which came out Tuesday. Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson performed “Live While We’re Young,” “What Makes You Beautiful” and other hits.

They were impressed with the huge crowd that turned out to see them for free. “For us, it's unbelievable to see this kind of support,” Styles said.

In fact, Al Roker said that it was the biggest crowd ever for a Today concert, reports Digital Spy.

Payne added, “We waited a long time to get an album out for the fans, and they deserve it...They've worked so hard for us over the last year and a half.”

Later, Horan said, “We are going to do our first ever movie,” noting that it will be in 3D.

Sony Pictures later confirmed the news with a press release, noting that it will be directed by Super Size Me’s Morgan Spurlock. It will hit theaters on Aug. 30, 2013.

“This is an incredible opportunity and an amazing moment in time for the band,” Spurlock said. “"To capture this journey and share it with audiences around the world will be an epic undertaking that I am proud to be a part of.”

Simon Cowell, who put the band together after they competed on The X Factor, called Spurlock the “perfect person to give that access-all-areas, behind-the-scenes look into what it's like to be One Direction today.”

The X Factor judge added, “What the band have achieved is incredible, they and their fans have made history around the world – this is for them.”
