Selena Gomez put on a brave face on Monday night at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards while her ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber performed at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
Gomez, 20, was honored with Glamour’s Woman of the Year for her work as youngest U.S. ambassador for UNICEF in history, as well as her work on television, her film career, fashion and music.
Ethan Hawke, Gomez’s co-star in Getaway, presented her with the award, The Huffington Post reports.
In her acceptance speech she said, “Thank you so much. I am so honored to be in a room full of women that I can only aspire to be as good as they are one day. I feel so lucky that every day I get to work with interesting people that are way smarter than me, and have taught me so much, like Ethan.”
She added, “I just want to share to all the girls out there that you have a voice, that you have a chance to do what you love, whether that is acting or singing. And just being true to who you are.”
Gomez then talked about her mom, saying, “The person that’s taught me that better than anyone is my mom. She is so strong and beautiful and has taught me everything, so thank you. Thank you Glamour, and Ethan and Cindi [Leive, Glamour's editor-in-chief]. This is really something I’ll never forget.”
Meanwhile, Bieber took to his Twitter account to write how much fun he had while performing at the Barclays Center. “AAAAHHHH!!! I had so much fun!!!! Best expierience ever!! “@justinbieber: who was at #BIEBERinBROOKLYN tonight? what did you think?” he wrote.
He also retweeted kind words from a fan, who said “heard that justin was smiling through his whole performance today. it makes me happy knowing this. i love seeing him happy. @justinbieber
