Rihanna became just the second artist in 2012 to top both the Billboard’s 200 albums and Hot 100 singles charts at the same time, thanks to a great debut for Unapologetic. Her latest album is her first No. 1 album and the single, “Diamonds,” retained the top spot on the Hot 100 chart.
Billboard reported that Unapologetic sold 238,000 copies during its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan numbers. Rihanna had never reached higher than No. 3 on the album chart before Unapologetic. Both 2010’s Loud and 2011’s Talk That Talk reached No. 3.
Rihanna is also the first artist since Adele to hold the top spot on both major Billboard charts in the same week. Back in February, while 21 was still topping the Billboard 200 chart, “Set Fire To The Rain” was No. 1 on the Hot 100. Adele, whose album already reached 10 million copies, was the only artist to accomplish this feat all of last year, notes Billboard.
“Diamonds” topped the Hot 100, but came in at No. 2 on the Digital Songs chart with 176,000 downloads sold.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Taylor Swift’s Red was at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, with 185,000 copies sold. One Direction’s Take Me Home slid to No. 3 with 176,000 copies, while American Idol winner Phillip Phillips’ The World From the Side of the Moon sold 169,000 copies.
