Selena Gomez stepped out for the first time since she broke up with Justin Bieber at Monday night’s Glamour 2012 Women of the Year Awards at Carnegie Hall in New York. She was among several honorees, which included Girls creator Lena Dunham, photographer Annie Leibovitz and the US women’s gymnastics team.
According to The Huffington Post, Gomez, 20, was given the Independent Spirit Award, which was presented by Getaway co-star Ethan Hawke.
“Thank you so much. I am so honored to be in a room full of women that I can only aspire to be as good as they are one day,” Gomez said in an emotional speech. “I feel so lucky that every day I get to work with interesting people that are way smarter than me, and have taught me so much, like Ethan. I just want to share to all the girls out there that you have a voice, that you have a chance to do what you love, whether that is acting or singing. And just being true to who you are.”
She also paid tribute to her mom, who she said is “is so strong and beautiful and has taught me everything, so thank you.”
She concluded, “Thank you Glamour, and Ethan and Cindi [Leive, Glamour's editor-in-chief]. This is really something I’ll never forget.”
Gomez also appears on the cover of Glamour’s December issue. In the interview, she continues to discuss how she appreciates the work her mom did while she was growing up and her experience as the youngest ever UNICEF ambassador.
This was Gomez’s first appearance since news broke that she and Bieber called it quits. According to People, Bieber was actually in Brooklyn Monday night to perform at the Barclays Center, where he sang Justin Timberlake’s “Cry Me A River.”
