Syfy announces new boxing robots reality show, 'Robot Combat League'

Fans of Real Steel can thank Syfy for creating a real version of the movie's huge boxing robots with their new reality show called Robot Combat League.

Syfy has already shot the first season filled with full-sized robots who will fight until one comes out the winner all while being controlled by a shadow-boxer like Hugh Jackman's character does in Real Steel, Science Fiction reports.

"It has always been our desire — and it’s really come around perennially — to update and do Battle Bots for the new century. Can we do Real Steel? Are we at a place where you can do real bipedal robots? Every time we tried to to do it, [the project] was stymied by the technology," Syfy president Mark Stern explained as quoted by Entertainment Weekly.

But thanks to robotics expert Mark Setrakian, who designed the robots appearing on the show, it seems they may just be able to achieve Real Steel.

"Up until we actually saw them in the ring fighting, we didn’t think it would work. Setrakian created a robotics system that can mimic a human’s actions and movements. We’ve had robots decapitated; we’ve had robots cut in half. It was truly spectacular," Stern continued.

According to Science Fiction, Syfy isn't the only ones with the idea of robot boxing. Rumor has it that the Discovery Channel has teamed up with James Cameron and Mark Burnett to produce their own robot boxing show.

Robot Combat League is set to premiere on February 26, 2013.
