For all you Twinkie, Ding Dong or Devil Dog lovers, prepare to have your heart broken. Hostess, the brand responsible for making these sweet treats and more, told the Huffington Post Friday that it will be permanently shutting down all operations across the United States. As you take a moment to grieve over this loss, we’re sharing with you our 10 favorite snacks to be produced by the iconic company.
10. Fruit Pies
These fluffy, jelly filled pastries, similar in appearance to a Hot Pocket, have all the sugary goodness you could hope for. Coming in a variety of flavors – lemon, apple, cherry, etc. – there’s nothing quite like biting into a Fruit Pie as the filling pours out the side.
9. Suzy Q
The ultimate sandwich – Suzy Qs come in two flavors, banana or devil’s food, and feature a chocolate top and bottom with a crème filling. It’s like a fattening, unhealthy take on the classic PB&J. But, Hey! Who’s complaining, right?
This tasty concoction is exactly what it’s called – a cupcake. But no ordinary cupcake! Hostess takes the fluffy pastry and dunks the top into a batch of flavored icing – orange or chocolate – and finishes off the treat with a spiraling swirl of white icing.
7. Sno Balls
Take a cream-filled chocolate cake, cover it with marshmallow frosting and dust it with coconut flakes. You’ve got yourself a Sno Ball. Besides being delicious, these treats come in a variety of fun colors – chocolate, lemon, white, green, blue and many others.
6. Mini Muffins
When those early mornings come around and you feel like you’ll be hours late to work, breakfast just isn’t an option. But there is nothing a package of Mini Muffins can’t fix. Easy to eat and available in a number of flavors, these tasty morning snacks put the fast in breakfast.
Yum, yum, yum! Donettes! These mini doughnuts of addiction are so good you won’t be able to have just one. You can buy them powder sugared, original or chocolate covered and once you open the bag, it’s safe to say you won’t stop eating until you reach the bottom.
4. Ding Dongs
There was nothing more exciting than getting to school and opening the lunch bag Mom packed you to find a delicious, chocolaty Ding Dong, a chocolate covered cake, shaped like a hockey puck, with a creamy filling.
3. Honey Buns
Oh, the magic of a warm Honey Bun. Like the Mini Muffins, this particular treat is perfect for those mornings on the go. But the real secret to releasing all of the Honey Bun’s sweet flavor is to warm it in the toaster oven or microwave for a few seconds. Ooey, gooey and delicious.
An American classic, the Twinkie symbolizes all things good in this world. A long yellow cake with white crème on the inside, this tasty treat may not be as much of a wow factor as some of the other Hostess products, but there’s something about this particular pastry that makes the world feel like a better place.
There is no other Hostess produced treat as perfect as the Ho-Ho. Equal parts chocolate and crème, the pastry is rolled into a spiral, ensuring that you get a bit of everything with each bite.
