Twilight fans came out in force Thursday night to catch the last installment of The Twilight Saga as soon as they could. Breaking Dawn - Part 2 is poised to break the franchise’s previous opening weekend record and has already made $30.4 million in late Thursday screenings.
While that is a high mark, The Wrap reports that Breaking Dawn - Part 2 fell short of the all-time midnight mark set by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 in 2011. The final Harry Potter film grossed $43.5 million at midnight and went on to make $169.2 million during its opening weekend.
Most recently, The Dark Knight Rises grossed $30.6 million at midnight screenings.
Breaking Dawn - Part 2 did pass the $30.2 million made by Part 1 last year. Part 1 grossed $138.1 million in its first weekend.
As we previously reported, Breaking Dawn - Part 2 is expected to make nearly $150 million this weekend, which would break the record for the franchise’s highest debut. New Moon, which made $142.8 million in its first weekend, still holds the record.
Breaking Dawn - Part 2 has also made $13.8 million internationally this week, notes The Hollywood Reporter.
The film stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner.
