Warner Bros. hoping to sign Jack Nicholson to star in 'The Judge'

Warner Bros. is trying to sign Jack Nicholson to star in The Judge as Robert Downey, Jr.'s father.

The movie is about a successful attorney, played by Downey, who returns to his hometown for his mother's funeral but discovers his father, who suffers from Alzheimer's, is the murder suspect. Downey's character has to represent his father and in turn becomes a better person, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Negotiations with Nicholson are supposed to begin this week but it's unsure if the actor will agree to sign on. In the last ten years he has only starred in four movies, two of them include The Departed in 2006 and The Bucket List in 2007, reports Collider.

Downey just wrapped on Iron Man 3 and is set to produce The Judge with his wife, Susan Downey, and David Gambino, who are both part of his production company, Team Downey. David Dobkin will direct as well as produce the movie with his producing partner, Jeff Kleeman.

Warner Bros. may need to put in some hard work to sign Nicholson. He had originally turned down the role of mobster Frank Costello in The Departed, but after meetings with both Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese he was convinced to sign on, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

With Downey's schedule closing up within the coming year, they are hoping to get Nicholson signed before then.
