This Week In Comics - 11/28

By Michael R. Murray,

Here's what’s new in comics for Nov. 28…

Thanksgiving’s over and we’re in the home stretch for Christmas.  This is a perfect time to look outside your comfort zone and treat yourself to something you may not normally try.  You never know, you may find your new favorite book.

First up this week we’ve got the December Previews with the first look at what’s scheduled to start shipping in February…

Explore Forbidden Worlds Archives hc vol 1, $49.99, from Dark Horse Comics.  Written by Richard E. Hughes with art by Al Williamson and various others, this playfully bizarre anthology series that hit newsstands in 1951 collects #’s 1 – 4 of the 145 outlandish issues.  It also features the first in a series of introductory essays by comic historian and connoisseur of the obscure, Dan Nadel…

DC Comics is hoping to capitalize on the success of the new Arrow television series with Arrow #1, $3.99, written by Marc Guggenheim and Andrew Kreisberg, the show’s creators, and featuring covers and interior art from legendary Green Arrow: The Longbow Hunters artist Mike Grell…

When a mysterious angel plummets to Earth and lands in a dark forest, where his dying body is found by the mystical denizens of this strange place, the gathered fauns, fairies, hags, and hobgoblins debate what to do with him as each tells a story of who they imagine this celestial creature to be: hero, lover, protector, or killer.  Conceived and stunningly illustrated by Rebecca Guay, Flight of Angels tp, $17.99, is written by an all-star lineup of today’s top fantasy talent including Bill Willingham (Fables) and Holly Black (The Spiderwick Chronicles)…

IDW had a big company-wide crossover with Infestation 2 complete series hc, $39.99, written by Duane Swierczynski and others, a whole committee on art and a cover by Alex Garner.  The elder gods of H.P. Lovecraft invade the worlds of IDW and the call of Cthulhu infests 30 Days of Night, Dungeons & Dragons, GI Joe, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Transformers.  If zombies weren’t bad enough, how do you stop inter-dimensional monsters?...

Katie Cook and Andy Price have worked up My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic #1, $3.99, and it’s a sell-out!  Second print’s coming but this is where you’ll see the Mane Six try to save Ponyville.  One of my customers was embarrassed to ask for this.  Don’t be embarrassed!  You like what you like and there are comics enough for all tastes and this is hugely popular.  I judge not only by the sell-out book, and by that I mean every version is sold out; the regular cover, the subscription variant and the complete box set ($24.99), but the gigantic, never-ending line at the Pony booth at the New York Comic Con…

Image Comics and Jonathan Luna have got an interesting little book here in Star Bright & The Looking Glass hc, $19.99.  A forest maiden encounters an evil sorceress who steals her beauty and she must embark on a dangerous journey with her animal friends to retrieve it.  This marks the solo debut of Luna as he writes and illustrates an original fairy tale picture book of prose and 33 watercolor illustrations in a 9 x 12 hardcover format…

Billy Tucci A Child Is Born hardcover, $15.99, from Apostle Arts, new for Christmas, this is the hardcover collection of the six time CBG nominated book…

What goes down when the capes come off?  Meet the "real housewives" of Earth’s greatest super-team.  Supurbia tp vol 1, $9.99, from Grace Randolph and Russell Dauterman and Boom Studios

And plenty more that’s not listed.  For a more complete list, feel free to visit your local comic store or favorite site.  If you’re interested in more of what I think, follow me on Twitter at Mycomicstore001 or like my Facebook page.
