This Week In Comics - 11/7

By Michael R. Murray,

Here are the new comics shipping this week:

Dark Horse Comics is shipping out 47 Ronin #1 (of 5), $3.99, written by Mike Richardson with art by Stan Sakai.  This is among the best-known tales in Japanese history, the legend of the 47 Ronin and their epic mission to avenge their disgraced master epitomizes the samurai code of honor.  This project was meticulously researched and even includes an editorial consultant in Kazuo Koike…

DC Comics is expanding the Before Watchmen roster with Before Watchmen Moloch #1 (of 2), $3.99, penned by J. Michael Straczynski and illustrated by Eduardo Risso features the story of the villain of the Watchmen universe…

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo hc vol 1, $19.99 by Denise Mina, Leonardo Manco, Andrea Mutti, and a cover by Lee Bermajo.  I didn’t see the movie and I haven’t read the book, but I’ve been so pleased with some of the other properties turned comics I’ve read recently (Game of Thrones) that I’m very much looking forward to this…

Geoff Johns, Doug Mahnke, and Christian Alamy created for us, the continuing story of the Rise of the Third Army in Green Lantern #14, $2.99.  The Justice League comes looking for answers about the missing Hal Jordan and the Corps makes a disturbing discovery about the Guardians.  This Green Lantern wave that Johns has written just keeps getting better and better.  Really makes me fear for what’s going to happen to these comics when he runs out of story and leaves them, although a thought just suddenly occurred to me.. Whatever happened to the other cosmic police force, Darkstars?...

IDW has the first sell out and it’s reprint material in the form of Angel: After the Fall slipcase edition, $59.99.  Written by Joss Whedon and Brian Lynch with art by Franco Urro and David Messina and a cover by Rebecca A. Wrigley, this edition collects Angel: After the Fall trade paperback vol’s 1-4…

Image Comics offers up two sold out books this week in Creator Owned Comics #6, $3.99, by Steve Niles, Dave Johnson, and Andrew Ritchie, featuring Killswitch part two and Black Sparrow part two.  The Second sold out book from Image this week is Happy #1 (of 4) 2nd printing, $2.99, by Grant Morrison and Darick Robertson.  This is the story of Nick Sax, a corrupt, intoxicated ex-cop turned hitman, adrift in a stinking twilight world of casual murder, soulless sex, eczema, and betrayal,  and how his life is forever changed by a little blue horse…

AVX Consequences #5 (of 5), $3.99, is the first sold out book from Marvel Comics and this, to me personally, is a perfect example of Marvel’s ‘Who cares about the product let’s just get it out there and get their money’ attitude.  This is the last issue of a five issue series and it’s written by Kieron Gillen and it’s shipping for sale on Wednesday and it’s still listed as the artist TBD.  To be determined!  Well it’s sold out so somebody ordered it…

Valiant Entertainment rolls out more of its new classics with Shadowman #1, $3.99, written by both Harvey Award nominee Justin Jordan and superstar Patrick Zircher with Zircher also pulling all of the art chores.  Trust me.  Treat yourself!
