By Daniel S Levine,

Paramount Pictures announced the release date for the highly anticipated sequel to Will Ferrell’s Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. The film is set to open in December 2013.

The studio made the announcement on its Facebook page, revealing that Anchorman: The Legend Continues will open on Dec. 20. 2013.

Will Ferrell announced the sequel in March when he appeared on Conan in character as the sexist, self-centered San Diego anchorman. In May, Paramount premiered a teaser trailer before The Dictator, which confirmed that the rest of the main cast, including Paul Rudd, David Koechner and Steve Carell will be back.

Christina Applegate, who played Veronica Corningstone in the first film, will also be back, as will director/co-writer Adam McKay. Earlier this month, it was also reported that Bridesmaids star Kristen Wiig is being cast to play Carell’s love interest.

The first Anchorman made just $91 million at the box office, but the film has been a success on home video and on television.

According to BoxOfficeMojo, the other films opening on Dec. 20, 2013 include the CBS Films comedy Last Vegas, Sony’s Monuments Men, Disney’s Saving Mr. Banks and Fox’s Walking With Dinosaurs.
