American Psycho writer Bret Easton Ellis has drawn criticism again for his latest Twitter rant, taking aim at Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow, the only woman to win a Best Director Oscar.
In a tweet Thursday morning, Ellis wrote, “Kathryn Bigelow would be considered a mildly interesting filmmaker if she was a man but since she's a very hot woman she's really overrated.”

In his next tweet, he took specific aim at some of her films, including The Hurt Locker, which not only won her the Oscar, but also won Best Picture for 2009. “Kathryn Bigelow: Strange Days, K-19 The Widowmaker, Blue Steel, The Hurt Locker. Are we talking about visionary filmmaking or just OK junk?” he wrote.
Ellis’ tweets were immediately criticized by other Twitter users. The Wrap notes that Indiewire editor Alison Willmore wrote, “Can't we just agree not to indulge Bret Easton Ellis' transparent grabs for attention? For his own good! We're totes feeding his addiction!”
MSN’s Glenn Kenny added, “.@BretEastonEllis would be considered a mildly interesting writer if he was a mildly interesting writer.”
Prior to the rant, Ellis had tweeted, “Zero Dark Thirty might win critics awards but Silver Linings Playbook will win the Best Picture Oscar. This is how it always happens,” in reference to Bigelow’s latest film.
Zero Dark Thirty is garnering widespread praise from critics and has won the New York Film Critics Circle and the National board of Review Best Picture awards.
This is hardly the first time Ellis has made some controversial comments on Twitter. In October, he slammed Universal’s choice of writer for its Fifty Shades of Grey adaptation.
Ellis is currently working on The Canyons, which stars Lindsay Lohan.
