North Korea launched a rocket, which they claimed was a satellite Wednesday. The rocket went past the Philippines and into orbit.
This is a success after a serious of failures on pervious attempts. Analysts fear that North Korea are trying to create a missile capable of entering the Unitied States.
The New York Times reports that the launching prompted the United States and its two main Asian allies, Japan and South Korea, to demand further United Nations sanctions on North Korea.
North Korea’s ally China joined in the push to get North Korea to agree to UN sanctions.
“North Korea, as a member of the United Nations, has the obligation to abide by relevant resolutions of the United Nations Security Council,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman, Hong Lei.
CNN notes that the Japanese government believes that debris from the rocket came down in the sea off the Korean Peninsula, and a second piece fell into the East China Sea, and a final piece landed in waters near the Philippines.
