Emerald named 2013 color of the year by Pantone

By Daniel S Levine,

If dictionaries can name words of the year, the color experts at Pantone LLC have the right to name color of the year. The company said Thursday that the color for 2013 is emerald.

Pantone, which creates colors for the fashion and beauty industries, described emerald specifically as a “lively, radiant, lush green.” The company noted how it has been used in fashion, at home and for beauty throughout this past year. In its Fashion Color Report for Spring 2013, designers Tracy Reese, Nanette Lepore, Barbara Tfank, NAHM and Marimekko are shown using the color in their new spring collections.

According to The AP, Leatrice Eiseman, the executive director for the company’s research arm, said that green’s popularity has been on the rise thanks to environmental awareness over the past few decades.

“Green is the most abundant hue in nature – the human eye sees more green than any other color in the spectrum,” Eisman said in a statement. “As it has throughout history, multifaceted Emerald continues to sparkle and fascinate. Symbolically, Emerald brings a sense of clarity, renewal and rejuvenation, which is so important in today’s complex world. This powerful and universally appealing tone translates easily to both fashion and home interiors.”

Yahoo notes that several celebrities, including the Duchess of Cambridge and Kristen Wiig, have been seen wearing the green color.

The color for 2012 was Tangerine Tango, an orange color.
