The body of Jacintha Saldanha, the nurse who committed suicide after receiving a prank call concerning Kate Middleton’s pregnancy, arrived in her hometown in Mangalore, India.
Saldanha’s husband Benedict Barboza and two children, Junal, aged 17, and Lisha, aged 14, traveled on the same flight as the deceased nurse’s coffin.
A funeral service was held 30 miles north of Mangalore, in Shivra, at Our Lady of Health church on Monday, where an estimated 2,000 attended.
“We have never seen a crowd like this. It is unbelievable,” said Our Lady of Health’s priest Father Stany Tauro, according to The Telegraph.
The priest revealed that the funeral had the largest crowd he had even seen at the church, with friends, family and members of the community paying their respects to the nurse.
Saldanha was discovered Dec. 3 hanging from her quarters at King Edward VII Hospital in London after transferring a prank call from Australian radio station 2DayFM to another employee of the hospital who divulged information about Kate Middleton’s pregnancy, according to the Associated Press.
A fellow nurse, who did not want to be named, spoke kind words about Saldanha, according to the Brisbane Times.
“Whenever any other student nurse needed any help, she was there,” she said. “If someone needed money, she gave it. During her visit last December to the hospital, she gave a 2000-rupee donation to pay for the cost of medicine.”
