The trailer for Pacific Rim, the highly anticipated first film from director Guillermo Del Toro since 2008, has hit the web. Del Toro’s signature visual style is brought into 3D with the film, which features giant, human-piloted robots fighting against gigantic monsters.
As MTV News notes, the trailer opens with a narration from Jaeger pilot Raleigh Antrobus, played by Sons of Anarchy’s Charlie Hunnam. “We always thought alien life would come from the stars,” he says. “But it came from deep beneath the sea — a portal between dimensions in the Pacific Ocean.”
There are images of the giant monsters coming from beneath the ocean, rising to destroy human civilization. But there are some not ready to give up, and we are introduced to a team of men and women who pilot huge robots that fight hand-to-hand against the monsters.
“Today, at the edge of our hope, at the end of our time, we have chosen to believe in each other,” leader Stacker Pentecost, played by Prometheus’ Idris Elba, yells. “Today, we face the monsters that are at our door. Today, we are canceling the apocalypse!”
The film is being post-converted to 3D, Warner Bros. said back in September. It hits theaters on July 12, 2013.
This is the Pan’s Labyrinth director’s first film since his 2008 sequel to Hellboy, Hellboy II: The Golden Army.
