'Hawaii Five-0' Recap: 'Huaka'I Kula' (Field Trip)

By Cheryl Hollar,

The episode begins with McGarrett telling the Aloha Girls Camp (including Grace) that he once saw a boar kill a tiger. He tells the girls that boars are all over the island, and they can attack without warning.

Danny and the girls’ guide comment to each other that McGarrett is there only to teach survival skills.

One of the girls, Lucy, excuses herself to go and get her sweater. When she doesn’t come back in a reasonable amount of time, the guide goes to look for her and cannot find her. McGarrett goes to check the trail.

On the way, he finds Lucy, and a hiker named Ron, who has a gash on his leg.

As McGarrett dials his cell to call paramedics, Ron cocks a gun he points at him. He then takes McGarrett’s cell and knife.

Meanwhile, Kono and Adam meet Adam’s brother, Michael, at the airport. He is getting out of prison after serving a ten-year sentence. Adam has not seen him in the ten years, by Michael’s request. Kono notices a photographer taking pictures of them. Adam has not told Michael yet that he is legitimizing the family business.

Back at camp, McGarrett walks up, with Ron and Lucy behind him. Ron still holds the gun on McGarrett, asks for all cells and weapons. He also wants to take McGarrett and Lucy with him to look for something in the jungle. In the confusion that ensues, Ron shoots Danny.

Ron then makes McGarrett lock Danny, the guide, and the girls in the supply shed.

In the shed, the guide removes the bullet from Danny’s arm.

In assessing the situation, Danny discovers loose floorboards and no foundation underneath. They decide to dig their way out. Grace wiggles under the boards to get out and open the door so that everyone can get out.

Back at Adam’s house, Adam, Kono, and Michael share a meal Kono has had delivered from Leonard’s Bakery. They discuss the changes to be made to legitimize the family business, and Adam excuses himself to go to a meeting. When he leaves, Michael tells Kono he never thought he’d hear about all those crazy changes in the business nor share breakfast with his brother’s cop girlfriend. Kono asks if he has a problem with that, and he says no problem.

At campsite, Danny and the guide discover their cars won’t start. The spark plugs have been cut. Danny gets a sample of blood Ron left on the side of the Camaro to be analyzed. One of the girls says she can fix one of the cells enough to communicate on it.

McGarrett, Lucy, and Ron come upon a hiker. After talking with them for a moment, he turns to leave, and Ron shoots him. He falls down an embankment.

Chin shows Kono photograghs from the airport taken by the photographer Kono saw. The photos were sent to Chin by a friend of his, a field officer with the FBI. His friend thought he’d be interested in who Kono and Adam picked up. Chin tells Kono that Michael was doing time for manslaughter and that he is a very dangerous man.

Chin gets a call from Danny, who tells him they were jacked and that McGarrett and Lucy were taken.

Chin and Kono find there is a Land of Natural Resources Station within 5 miles of the camp. Chin is on the way to help find McGarrett and Lucy. Someone from the HPD crime lab also arrives on scene to get the blood sample from Danny.

When Danny and the guide go off to find McGarrett and Lucy, they see a parachute in a tree and find some blood. They believe this is when Ron hurt his leg. They ask Kono to check for any plane crashes in the area.

Kono finds that a plane did go down. The only people on the plane were the pilot and an armed guard. The pilot was killed, and the armed guard and two million dollars worth of diamonds from a jewelry expo are missing.

Kono uses info from the crime lab to identify Ron as a small-time crook.

McGarrett, Lucy, and Ron come to an area where Ron says he lost a bag. Lucy finds the bag hanging from a tree. Ron sends Lucy up the tree to get the bag.

When Ron is distracted by Lucy at the tree, McGarrett overpowers him and tells Lucy to run. As McGarrett gets Ron’s gun and holds it on him, he sees Lucy out of the corner of his eye with another man, Ron’s partner.

Meanwhile, Danny and the guide come upon the hiker who was shot and fell down the embankment. They get a possible destination from the hiker. Danny calls it in to Chin, who is already on scene with HPD. A stolen car has been found, and the prints were traced to a Wilson Hines, a bank robber who shared a cell with Ron.

As McGarrett and Lucy watch, Hines shoots Ron. McGarrett and Lucy make a run for it.

Chin finds Danny and the guide.

As McGarrett and Lucy come to a clearing, McGarrett tells her she needs to hide. She does not want to, but he assures her he will come back for her.

While McGarrett lures Hines away from Lucy, Chin comes to the clearing. He coaxes Lucy to come out.
Hines catches up to McGarrett and is about to shoot him, when Danny shoots Hines instead.

At the end of the episode, Danny and Grace are set to spend the night in a tent Danny has set up in his living room.

In the last scene of the night, Kono and Adam are asleep in bed as Michael watches, then slides Kono’s gun in her holster on the nightstand.
